Every Febuary 14th, across the United States and in other places around the world, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. The story of the patron saint is shrouded in mystery. It has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains aspects of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome. Emperior Claudis II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, outlawing marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudis and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered Claudis ordered that he should be put to death. Whatever the history of Valentine's Day, we here at the Rowdy Raider blog hope you have a great day of love!
